Dr. Jeffrey J. Smith
Dr. Jeff Smith has led a distinguished career in education as a teacher, principal and district office administrator for 30 years. He is currently Superintendent of the Balsz School District in Phoenix, Arizona where he lives with his wife and three children. He graduated from Arizona State University with Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees in Elementary Education and Administration. Dr. Smith was selected as Arizona Superintendent of the Year in 2012 and was recognized in 2013 as a Diversity Champion by the Phoenix Business Journal.
Dr. Smith is very active in the community serving on several boards and advisory councils. These include but are not limited to; President of the Balsz Community Education Foundation and member of the Board of Directors for Educare Arizona. He is a member of the School Facilities Board for the State of Arizona. He also serves on the Advisory Council for Expect More Arizona, Assistance League of Phoenix and the Grade Level Reading Work Group for Build Az through the Valley of the Sun United Way. In addition he supports higher education through advisory committees for Gateway Community College and as an adjunct faculty professor for Argosy University.
Dr. Smith is best known for his innovative reform strategy to extend the school year by 20 days. The Balsz School District is the first in the United States to adopt a 200 day calendar providing extended learning time for all schools. This dynamic change is leading to high academic achievement and extraordinary gains in English Language Acquisition for students. Jeff is an accomplished author having published numerous articles in Galileo for the Superintendent and North Star for Principals through The Master Teacher. He has been featured in District Administration Magazine, is a book reviewer for AASA The School Administrator Magazine and has received numerous awards for innovation and leadership.
