The Balsz Elementary School District Governing Board is dedicated to advancing the district’s mission of nurturing every student’s unique potential while fostering a dynamic, supportive learning environment as evident by the district’s “Children First” motto. Each board member brings a wealth of experience and dedication to their role, collectively working to ensure that our schools remain a beacon of educational excellence, community engagement, and future-focused growth.

Military Veteran, Engineer, and Community Leader

Col. Vic Grace brings nearly a decade of experience on the Balsz Governing Board, combining leadership from his military service and engineering career with a strong commitment to student success. As a professional engineer, he is especially passionate about expanding STEM opportunities across the district and takes pride in seeing students actively engaged in science, technology, engineering, and math.

With a strategic, solutions-oriented mindset and a deep understanding of the district’s history and goals, Col. Grace plays a key role in driving continuous improvement. He is dedicated to guiding Balsz schools toward a future where every student has the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.

Committed Parent Leader and School Community Advocate

Sidra Zaidi brings a valuable perspective to the Balsz Governing Board as an actively involved and dedicated parent. A district resident since 2020 and parent of three students at Griffith Elementary, she offers firsthand insight and a deep personal investment in the success of Balsz schools.

Appointed to the Governing Board in 2024, Ms. Zaidi had already demonstrated a strong commitment to educational excellence through her role as President of the Griffith Elementary Parent Teacher Organization—a position she continues to hold. Her leadership and ability to build strong partnerships between families, educators, and administrators provide a solid foundation for her board service. She is committed to fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and student-focused learning environment.

Retired Accountant and Economist

Mr. Todd Schwarz is the longest-serving member of the Balsz Elementary School District Governing Board, having served since 2010. A retired accountant and economist, he brings extensive experience in financial management and economic strategy. His leadership helps ensure district resources are allocated efficiently and responsibly, supporting both academic achievement and enriching extracurricular programs. Mr. Schwarz’s commitment to sustainable resource management provides a strong foundation for the district’s long-term success.

Dedicated Parent Advocate and Community Leader

Dr. Gail Knight has proudly served on the Balsz Governing Board since 2012, following a lifetime of advocacy for public education in both San Diego and Phoenix. A devoted parent of three children who thrived in public schools, she brings a compassionate, student-centered perspective to board decisions. Her extensive experience as a community leader and education advocate ensures that the needs of all students are at the forefront, especially those from historically underserved communities.

Dr. Knight understands the value of a high-quality education and her lifelong commitment to public education and her experience as a tireless parent and community advocate provide the board with a deeply compassionate, student-centered perspective.

Public School Graduate and Community Organizer

Jacob George joined the Balsz Governing Board in January 2025 after being elected in November 2024. A proud graduate of Arizona’s public school system, Mr. George brings firsthand understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing students today. He graduated from public school in Arizona and has since dedicated his career to political organizing and community advocacy.

His lived experience—including navigating housing instability during the 2008 financial crisis—informs his strong commitment to supporting students and families beyond the classroom. Mr. George advocates for practical solutions focused on teacher support and retention, safe and welcoming school environments, and responsible management of public resources. He believes in the power of education to transform lives and in the importance of community-rooted leadership.

Together, the members of the Balsz Governing Board work tirelessly to ensure the district provides a supportive, empowering environment for all. Their wide-ranging experiences and shared dedication help shape a thriving district where students, teachers, families, and the community come together to achieve great things.
