Tillman Students 1st Place in Champions for Change
Recently a team from Tillman Middle School participated in the Champions for Change Innovation Hackathon, a 20 hour overnight event hosted by Camelback High School in which students solved a problem focused on the issues outlined in the Global Goals Initiative Campaign: food sustainability, fresh water, renewable resources and education. Students built a prototype, created a presentation board and gave a 2 minute Pitch. Both students from Camelback High School and 4 Middle Schools (Tillman, Madison, Wilson and Creighton) participated in the event.
The Warriors team from Tillman Middle School, Mia M., Emily S. and Jaiden G., won 1st place in the Middle School's Education category for their invention of "EPB", Electric Powered Bike. The team identified a problem that students come to school without having their laptops charged. Their solution was a 10-person bike that would generate and store electricity in batteries to allow charging of laptops during the day. Not only does the bike provide electricity, but also fits into Tillman's focus on physical education and the Kinetics program.
Having won 1st place in the their category, the team had to face the other seven 1st Place teams, both Middle School and High School, and present to an 8 judge "Shark Tank" to compete for the Grand Prize.
Connie Padian, Leslee Jonovich, Dusty Louthan chaperoned the event.
